Francis Abioye founded the Tropical Wildlife Domestication Center (TWDC). He started Wildlife domestication work to promote the domestication of indigenous wildlife species, train hunters from across the tropics, and help reduce heavy hunting pressure on endangered tropical wildlife species.
He started as a serving Youth Corps member in Imo State. His resourcefulness and creativity in Wildlife Domestication and youth empowerment merited him the best Youth Corps member award of his set.
He championed grasscutter and snail domestication in the southeastern part in 2003, which covers some higher institutions, government agencies, individual private farms, etc. He organizes training and capacity-building for youth and various hunter groups in the southeastern part of Nigeria.
His activity developed into the formation of the Tropical Wildlife Domestication Centre (TWDC) which became incorporated with the Cooperate Affairs Commission in 2010. The TWDC has established various projects in partnership with Imo State Polytechnics, Umuagwo Owerri, Imo State, Abia State University, and the Center for Youth Development in River State.
We have also established several Wildlife farms and some Zoos such as Ayim Pius Ayim Biodiversity and Recreational Centre of Excellence, Rochas Mini Zoo, Oomu Resort, and Imo State Zoo and Wildlife Park.
TWDC has trained thousands of people on the domestication of various indigenous wildlife species, such as Snails, Grasscutters, Ostriches, Beekeeping (Honey production), Crocodiles, etc. The centre is deeply committed to youth empowerment programmes, through the development of our Tropical and indigenous technology. TWDC is a dynamic consultant in establishing and managing many farms in Eastern Nigeria; he has also rehabilitated some distressed commercial farms in Nigeria.
We are registered trainers with Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Fadama Project, Global Environmental Facility (GEF), Rivers State Government, etc. TWDC is a consultant to Shonghai Farm Porto-Novo, especially in the area of wildlife domestication and our publication on
Grasscutter domestication is a major material used in this international centre for training their participants from all over the world. We are frequently invited to speak at local and international conferences, workshops, and seminars. A few publications and research are credited to TWDC.
This will not only preserve the country’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage but also stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and foster sustainable development practices for future generations.
