Shutting Down of an Illegal Zoo in Lagos State

In a bid to stop the illegal acquisition and breeding of wildlife animals in Nigeria, Mr Francis Abioye, together with some animal conservation professionals, shut down an illegal Zoo in Lagos State. This project was carried out while Mr Francis Abioye was serving as the President of the Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks (NAZAP).

The Zoo was housing a female lion. According to the report, was brought in by a foreigner who came to Nigeria to carry out a project.

Abioye collaborated with other professionals to rescue and move the lioness to a nearby Zoo for proper care and nurturing.

Why the Illegal Zoo in Lagos was Shut Down

Wildlife trafficking is a criminal offence according to the law. One of TWDC’s missions is to stop wildlife trafficking in all its forms. According to the definition provided by the UNODC involves “the illegal trade, smuggling, poaching, capture, or collection of endangered species, protected wildlife (including animals or plants that are subject to harvest quotas and regulated by permits), derivatives, or products thereof”.

Wildlife trafficking includes the illegal domestication of wild animals. The poaching of tigers and elephants for their skins and bones, as well as the removal of ivory from elephants. Numerous other species, including timber trees and marine turtles, are overfarmed as well.

The Illegal Zoo was shut down for the owner’s involvement in the illegal domestication of a wild animal.
